Papa Get Me The Moon

2nd graders watched the video story of Papa Get Me, by Eric Carle. The first day we painted the background paper two types of blue and then used paint scrapers to scratch in a design. I also took their photograph this day, of them pretending to climb a ladder. The following class they cut out moon and stars from silver and gold paper. They then created a ladder by gluing tooth picks down their paper to their moon. The last step was to cut out their photograph and glue themselves climbing the ladder to the moon.

Hippos

Third graders reviewed the wonderful artist Eric Carle. We watched a short interview with Carle about his new book the Blue Horse. This video was great because it showed how he puts together his pictures for his story using the collage technique. That is what third graders focused on, using collage in their art work. Instead of painting their paper like Eric Carle, they used oil pastels and made lines and patterns all over their paper. Next they followed a map of how create a hippo with simple shapes that I drew out a head of time on the chalk board. They pieced together their hippo on a water colored background. Last step was adding the under water effect by putting white or light blue tissue on top of hippo using art paste.

The Grouchy Lady Bug

First grade read The Grouchy Lady Bug by Eric Carle. We also talked about the art technique collage. The students used tissue paper and paper mache glue to make green and red paper the first class. The second class they cut and glued shapes to make their lady bug. I think their favorite part was making the angry eye brows and the frown. They also added little baby lady bugs with the left over red paper.
